Verdict: 1/2 of us will return.

French Onion Soup: it was tasteless. I don’t think i really need to elaborate on it further.

waffles: considering this is the second time that my mum has returned, she mentioned how the first time around the waffles were much better -> in terms of the level of fluffiness and crisp. This time around both waffles were just too airy and not very crispy.

Verdict: 2/2 of us will return!

1. The scallop appetiser was really something different from the usual in a good way, if you like creamy sauces 🙂 Scallop was well cooked => not too raw that it is too mushy and not too over cooked that it tastes like rubber.

2. Mains:
Seafood linguine was really flavourful. The sauce was not too saltish and overall had an impactful seafood flavour. Linguine was al dente and seafood was really fresh and plentiful.
Pork Medallion : the first time that I am eating it medium rare – I always thought pork should be cooked till well done . It was really succulent and didn’t have that raw porky after taste. This cooking style was recommended by the friendly waitress and no turning back for me.

3. Desserts:
was really just nice to share after the filling mains 🙂 . Crispy on the outside, molten in the inside 🙂

4. Others:
For one, service here is very good. We did not have a reservation but the waitresses and waiters attended to us very quickly and keep coming back to check in on our progress throughout the meal.

1. Pasta was not over cooked. we were not too hungry so the smaller portion (mushroom ravioli) was enough for the two of us. The bigger portion (cabonara) was also well executed.

2. loved the sweet potato fries 🙂 was something very different. Well-battered and not too heavy 🙂 very nice indeed.

3. Calamari was also just nothing bad and not spectacularly good. .. like its the average calamari taste across restaurants

Verdict: 1.25/2 of us will return.

1. Appetizers: Calamari was different from what we expected to be : deep fried and crispy. This different is a good kind of different. The squid was not overcooked and had a very pleasant bbq texture to it. Not at all rubbery. Well executed.  The broken pork sausage was quite a good attempt in something different… but didn’t really blow our minds

2. Mains: The fish was really fresh. The texture of it was similar to salmon and cod fish mixed together (if that makes sense).  I really enjoyed it, although I must say it is not as ‘fatty’ in terms of ‘fish oiliness’ comparatively to salmon and cod, but the meat texture was firm and not overcooked.  Well executed.   The beef was quite well done as well, not over cooked and tough.

3. Sides:  I think the picture spoke for itself. It was quite good .

it is quite a hearty meal I must admit. Both of us were stuffed full after the meal.
The fish was well executed, the sides were seared nicely with a little crisp, and yet not drowned in oil.
Garden risotto was very hearty although it was all vegetables, it was pretty substantial.

A very nicely tucked away for chillout sessions or just catching up 🙂
Will like to try the brunch next time 🙂

Verdict: 3/3 of us will return!
Apart from the noisy environment where even though we were sitting next to each other, we couldn’t hear ourselves, I really thought the food was pretty up to expectations.
Appetizers were very different from the usual kinds, and the combinations complimented each other very well.
Mains were all executed well.
To me,  a good steak is defined as it can be eaten without any sauce. And this cut of the meat, where it is quite lean and little fats to keep the steak juicy, it does require quite a fair bit of skill to keep it at a medium rare consistency.
The pork was also good in that it is moist and the accompaniments complimented well.
The crab tortellini was also just nice (although I thought it did looked abit little) in terms of portion size and scallops cooked to perfection.

wanted to stay on for dessert but .. looking at what the other tables had, we just went off somewhere instead.

This is a very back track post! I do apologise for not being consistent with my updates! really been quite swamped with things on my end :/

Verdict: 2/2 of us will definitely return here!!!

the nice ambience and all 🙂 we would be very delighted to return and try their brunch!

The crabcakes was just a dish I was looking forward to!! but I thought it was too ‘potato – stuffed’. The crab meat was slightly little for my liking.

The Foie Gras was quite an interesting dish.. it was quite a nice when eaten altogether ..and the sauce was went very well with the dish.

The Miso Cod was also very well done!  It looks very under marinated but in reality, it is very flavourful! the mushrooms as well was very well seasoned.

The desserts were good to round off the dishes 🙂

The Churros were crispy on the outside, but nice and soft in the inside. Chocolate sauce was not too thick until you felt sick after eating a few sticks ..

The Foundant cake was really special! I never came across a peanut butter filled one and it was special for sure!!! the batter though was a little on the thick side. .. but the filling was just awesome 🙂

Can’t wait till the next time I am back here 🙂

Little Part One

To continue our red line adventures, we said that we will continue trying out hideaway along the red line. [ by red line, it is in the context of MRT lines, the main red and green line? yup]

So we decided to make at trip down to Little Part one to try their mains!

and a quick glance around

Surroundings

so we both ordered drinks

Double Shot latte

and for troopie gracie

Pear Cider

*disclaimer* please do not drink and drive! and if you are under aged just wait till you are legal.

and for our mains, I ordered something light because I am wanted back home for dinner. I thought I go light with a salad.. but when it came, I was shocked but the portion. ITs HUGE!

Chicken Salad

and for troopie gracie,

Ribs

I liked how at the bottom on the menu they actually put up this notice:

no wastage indeed

Verdict: 2/2 of us will return.

They are not only generous with their portions, we also felt that the price wise was pretty reasonable. The environment is also very quiet and I would recommend this place for catch ups, or even just to chill and get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Troopie grace mentioned that her  ribs were very tender and not over cooked. The meat came off the bone very easily and its also moist.

My salad was really huge but nicely done as well.  The dressing after a while however, was abit too much to manage.

But nonetheless, a very nice chill out from a week of business!

Looking forward to check out the new next place along the red line 🙂

Skyve Elementary Bistro and Bar

I met up with dear mama Phua – its been quite a long while since I last saw her! Busy mama phua! So, we decided to go try a new place that is convenient for us both around the Newton area for lunch, called Skyve bar ( an apt name and description to describe our mood)

The location seems like an ex factory like building, but the decoration of this restaurant is very laid back and at the same time has a tinge of “arti-ness” to it.

We both decided to order the set lunch 🙂 and to start us off, Hot bread

Bread to start

For our drinks

Flat White

Latte

For our appetizers, we took both

Cold Soba and Toufu : Seaweek ‘cavier’, spring onion and wasabi & yuzu dressing

GRAVLAX & EGG: Egg with soft yolk, fresh dill in creme fraiche, gherkin and japanese cucumber

and for our mains,

Confit of Duck Leg: Sous vide crispy duck leg, apple & fennel salad, balsamic vinegar & mustard seed dressing

Fish of the day : Grilled Snapper with layered Potato

Verdict:  1.5/2 of us will return probably to try different things.
Mama phua had the soba appetizer + the duck confit. She mentioned that she didn’t really enjoy her appetizer because she thought the combination was .. to eat it all together was a little weird. The duck confit however, was very thoroughly cooked. Nothing to complain or pint point about it, but just not the best she had ..

I had the egg appetizer + the Grilled snapper. I also didn’t enjoy my appetizer only because I thought the smoked salmon had abit of a strong fishy taste. .. I enjoy eating smoked salmon and raw fish, but somehow this one was just bad.  My snapper however, was very well cooked! I enjoyed it very thoroughly and liked the sauce that went with it .. 🙂

One redeeming quality however, was the service was very good. The crew was very attentive in clearing our plates and refilling our water. 🙂

So anytime you feel like slacking … feel free to swing by here!
