Tonkotsu Kazan Ramen

It takes one bowl of bad ramen to keep you off ramen forever, but a few good bowls to entice you to continue one’s love for ramen.

I stumbled upon this new ramen place that opened in Novena and decided to give it a chance..

Peak

I went to this place during off-peak hours, and managed to snag a seat ( thankfully they are opened during off-peak hours) 🙂

After much deliberation, I chose the Shio Egg ramen ( Salt flavoured broth egg topping ramen) .. and what came surprised me

Verdict: I am so coming back here! I thought they mistook my order because I didn’t expect my bowl to be filled with 3 half eggs! and these eggs were those kind that are marinated in broth and sauce – so they are not the bland kind. The char siew was also very nicely done. This kind of cut of char siew is very meaty and yet they didn’t over cook it so it came quite tender. Although I think what would have topped off the experience is if they char grilled the charsiew or blow torched the fella.

The broth was a little blend for me… but the toppings and gyoza( i ate it up too fast) totally made up for it ..

Next time I am returning to try this

Old Hong Kong

So for a family of Sunday lunch, we headed down to old hong kong at novena square for a dim sum fix- I must add that nowadays in Singapore, for Chinese Sunday lunches, it’s like impossible to get places unless you have made a reservation!

Verdict: 3.5/6 of us will return. Somehow this place is very well liked by my parents and uncle P & auntie M . But my bro and I didn’t really like this place. We felt that the standard did drop a little .. so was a little disappointing for us .. no special favourite dish, but ok, guess we couldn’t really have much of a choice since we didn’t make reservations. Nonetheless, a friendly neighbourhoodish dim sum :/

QQ Rice

I just wanted something light to eat before my exams, but just something that might sustain me, but not end up too filling .. so i headed to my usual favourite QQ rice ball and ordered myself :

Smoked Duck Flavoured ‘onigiri’

Instructions as to how to roll it

while unwrapping

and my finished product is :

Close up!!

Verdict: I will definitely order this again! There are many other flavours to choose from, and I like how the portion is really just nice in the sense – not too much that it makes you stuffed, and not too little that you need to keep eating something else to fill the stomach. ( this is in the scenario that you are just not feeling hungry for the day.)

Ichiban Boshi

So in the end, we headed for a quick lunch break before heading back to the books again.. And troopie plonks was feeling slightly not up to par,we ended up at ichiban boshi! Japanese food to cure the sickie 🙂

So then we ordered to share between us :

Verdict: i think this place is a jap joint pretty value for its money… Affordable and fast as well( we were pretty pressed for time)… And i think what i liked from what we ordered was – the paper steam boat, salmon belly mentai sushi.
I thought the mackeral was a little overcooked, trooper claims seared tuna was not seared enough, the softshell crab handroll – my guess is the oil to fry was probably not hot enough, hence the thing came alittle oiler and big in portion than expected

Ratings: 2/2 of us will return

But if you are in novena and looking for a quick value for money meal, this us the plae to go.
