Lady Boss

Lady Boss

Verdict: 5/5 of us will return

1. Always try to look for the lady boss to place an order! she is really friendly! and to add, after all these years of knowing her, she  has not aged at all!

2. If you enjoy Chinese style of lobsters, this is one of the better places to go to in Singapore in my humble opinion because the meat is really fresh. They do take pride in serving the freshest seafood whenever possible, but attached to it is also a premium 🙂

3. My family is not really a family that eats a lot of steamboats when we dine together, but this place, their home-made balls and fish paste is really different from the ones outside. Not too starchy and texture wise not too bouncy like a ping-pong ball.

4. The beancurd sheets gluten dish is one of my all time favourite dish to order. Can’t be found in many places and their origin is from Malaysia -> I think due to the natural water source, soya products from there, specifically Ipoh are really of a better quality and just taste really different from the ones we have here in Singapore 🙂

Damage: per pax, this meal was $80

Verdict: 6/10 of us will return.
We ordered the set and con-sensually agreed that the glutinous rice was the best dish out of all. (usually quite surprising because the carbohydrates dishes usually are just very ordinary) The moment it was served to the table, the smell of the rice permeated the table. The rice was cooked really well in terms of moisture and chewy-ness.
The rest of the other dishes were good, but all concluded were not something that they will specially go back for it. Although most of the dishes are of standard seriously, but just didn’t really impress us. The rice did, surprisingly.
Would recommend if you have business lunches or Chinese elders. Nice View 🙂

Black Ball

I have been obsessively crazy over this dessert
Black Ball

Signature : Grass Jelly, Red Bean, Sweet Potato ball, Yam Ball, Yam. Sweet Potato and Pearl

Signature : Grass Jelly, Red Bean, Sweet Potato ball, Yam Ball, Yam. Sweet Potato and Pearl

Signature with Creamer

Signature with Creamer

Verdict: 1/1 of me will totally return

What is so special about this? that was the first thought that I had when my friends were raving about it.
1) I realised the grass jelly ( well chin chow) was very different from the Singapore Hawker centers/ super market kind. This grass jelly was really chewy? and not jelly like texture did not have as strong a taste as the local ones here (not also saying that the local ones here are super strongly “Chinese Medicine Centered, pretty mild actually to me)
2) maybe being a sucker for yam related desserts, at first, the yam ball/ sweet potato ball was like a.. to describe it is pearl mixed with the real yam .. same with the sweet potato ball ..  its bait weird but acquired i would say
3) I always say I want to try the other bubble tea but always end up eating the signature :p

味香园甜品 Mei Heong Yuen Dessert

In the midst of this hot weather, looking for something to cool down?

why not try some Chinese Dessert?

Mango Shaved Ice

Mango Shaved Ice

Verdict: 3/3 of us will return for this.
we shared this among 3 of us  and it was just delightful!!
1) not too icy, strong mango flavour in the ice
2) not too sweet

Note: I took away the other traditional desserts such as the peanut paste, walnut paste and  yam paste . If you personally like syrup water or starchy water, go ahead and order. I definitely would not be coming back to buy these Chinese deserts

Verdict: 2/2 of us definitely return. Totally in line with my previous visits

This place is pregnant woman friendly 🙂 and for this dear girl who was craving duck, am very glad to have her craving satisfied.

She bought me this meal as a treat to my birthday .. So, Dessert was on me!! 😀

Thankfully the airport one had 🙂 The XLB( xiao long baos) are still good, but the vegetable was like .. ok .. loved the plain noodles 🙂 I think only crystal jade does this kind of noodles the best around Singapore 😀

Pu Tien Style “Qiang Rou” Soup

Verdict: 6/6 of us will return! But do remember there are 2 branches! so go to the main branch!

My favourite dish was the Yam dish, as well as the stuffed mantous! The squid was a new dish and it was quite well done – not too overcooked and rubbery! Didn’t really like the lor mee much .. and the soup .. but also appetizers wise, I think the pork slices and the century eggs were nice .. the bitter gourd was also something different and refreshing .. 🙂

Jumbo

Our Round #4 was proceeding to next door at Jumbo for a Chilli Crab feast since troopie plonkies claimed that she could finish a whole crab to herself!!!! 😀 and also because troopie Serene and Troopie Jassie haven’t eaten their dinner ..

So we all ordered to share:

Stuffed You Tiao

Salted Egg Yolk Prawn

andd….. of course most importantly ….

Fried Mantous

andd…..

…….

wait for it ….

..

.

Washing hands dish

AHHAHAHHA

ok

seriously

Chilli Crab

Verdict:  5/6 of us will return here for the Chilli Crab. The stuffed you tiao with squid was a little over stuffed – there was no equal balance with the you tiao and the stuffings, hence the dish came out soggy and was not very nice. The salted egg yolk prawn, according to my prawn taste testers were more buttery than saltish. They would prefer if there were more salted eggs instead of butter.  No major complaints about the Chilli Crab. The sauce was just as tasty – to me quite a strong tomato based but spicy enough for me to continuously dip the mantous into the sauce … Although I also wonder if its because its been such a long while since we all ate Chilli Crab that we all enjoyed it so thoroughly .. 🙂

Lao huo soup

I grew up in a family that emphasises a lot about soup. Without fail our mother will be devoted to boiling the best soup, and over the years think of ways to improve the way she cooks her soup – from cooking methods, utensils to the ingredients that goes into that pot of goodness.

After working in Hong Kong for a while, I have come to appreciate ‘sweet soup’ – soup that is boiled with fruits such as pears or apples. So I was introduced to this place by my auntie K initially, and thought this was one of the closest that I could get to my Hong Kong experience:

20120709-214730.jpg

So they have probably opened a few branches across Singapore, but I will always order the pear and apple soup

20120709-214847.jpg

Verdict: according to my auntie K, from all the outlets she tried ( almost all from jurong to whampo), she mentioned that her jurong side tastes better and they are more generous with the pork ribs inside. Each outlet doesn’t have a fixed consistency in the thickness of the soup, so the reccomendation is that it’s better to go to the ones with higher people turnover rates! One plus factor They are generous with their servings and have offered free re-fills if you are really hungry for that day!
I bought this from the whampo outlet and I think the soup is abit watery, in comparison to the one at united square.

Lao huo tang老火汤

Soup Kitchen

We all managed to meet up to celebrate troopie peapodie’s birthday! After a few rounds of suggestions and ‘votes’, we all decided and headed down towards Soup Kitchen for dinner.

Entrance

We ordered the set for 6 – and the food came super duper fast!

Appetizer: Dried Chilli and peanuts

Chrysanthemum Tea

dan gui and kai lan

Wolfberry and Ginseng Chicken Soup

Steamed Fish Slices

Beggar’s Toufu

Ginger and Spring Onion Venison meat

Broccoli with Chinese Mushroom and Beancurd Sheets

Penang Noodles

And of course, not forgetting, the main thing that we came here for:

Sam Sui Chicken

Cabbage to go with the Sam Sui Chicken

Verdict: 4.5/6 of us liked the place.                                                            troopie peapodie didn’t end up liking soup kitchen because she thought it was too herby for her delight. But overall taste wise is ok .. probably just not she will crave and go for.                                                                                         troopie ali overall didn’t like the soup because the chicken was “tough like sandpaper” although she said she tried their other soup – the pork rib one which she claims is not bad.                                                                                          I personally like the Samsui chicken – of course standard is still as good- as well as the broccoli and noodle dish. The chrysanthemum tea is presented quite uniquely, although the I kept drinking the flower together. Food wise, I think its quite a nice healthier alternative than the usual chinese restaurants, and of course, the second time that we are actually gathered in a chinese restaurant.
