The Flying Squrriel

Happy Friday everyone!!

have a good chillax weekend.

I have always seen this place being posted up on instagram .. food really looked appetizing

so I met my friend and we ordered to share:

Verdict: 2/2 of us will return

Overall, if I had to comment, I would order everything again. (maybe minus the chicken karage because it was just ok… and the apple crumble ) I loved it all, especially the chirashi don! be sure to dig deeper into the bowl as there is like their home made sauce mixed deep with the rice.

I think the best thing about sitting at the counter seat was being able to witness how the chef prepared food for other people .. it was like an artist at work using ordinary ingredients to make it aesthetically beautiful without compromising on the taste.

would return for:

1. Chirashi don
2. Hana maki
3. Negi-toro tataki

would want to try:

1. Uni Shooters
2. TFS signature roll
3. Spicy Maguro Maki
4. Foe Gras Aglio Olio

Verdict: 2/3 of us will return.

Coffee: Impressive latte art! My friends had a whale and a bear latte art drawn on their coffees. Taste wise was really ok if you like your after taste to not be so acidic.

Cake: consistent texture.
sweet level: 4/5

Waffle: This was something new that kinda worked. the whitish part is cream cheese, not normal cream.Nonetheless, it was quite solid the waffle, probably due to the chocolate inside. If you like your waffles to have a slightly heavier consistency, I would recommend this one. Crispiness was not compromised even though the mixture was towards the heavy side. 🙂
Just a thought:
1) I think they could try to infuse the cream cheese into the waffle , as I bit into it, there was chocolate inside the waffle, so instead of chocolate, i think if they did it with the cream cheese instead and continued to drizzle the chocolate sauce on the outside, it would have been quite a pleasant surprise.
2) come up with a cream cheese ice-cream equivalent if the above mentioned menthol of infusing the cream cheese is too much of a hassle. Chocolate ice-cream was too much for me.

sweet level: 4/5

Looking forward to return and try the other desserts 🙂

Note* : If i had to measure sweetness level through a cup of milo drink, imagine when making a cup of milo:
Sweet Level (1 being the lowest, 5 being the highest)

  1. Not at all sweet ( = 1tbsp of milo)
  2. Subtle sweet ( = 1.5 tbsp of milo)
  3. Generally Sweet ( = 2 tbsp of milo + 1 tbsp of condensed milk)
  4. Just nice (= 2 tbsp of milo + 1 tbsp of condensed milk + 1 tbsp of sugar)
  5. Too much (= milo (9 tbsp of milo+ 2tbsp of condensed mik and sugar))

Verdict: 2/2 of us will return!

1. Pasta was not over cooked. we were not too hungry so the smaller portion (mushroom ravioli) was enough for the two of us. The bigger portion (cabonara) was also well executed.

2. loved the sweet potato fries 🙂 was something very different. Well-battered and not too heavy 🙂 very nice indeed.

3. Calamari was also just nothing bad and not spectacularly good. .. like its the average calamari taste across restaurants

Verdict: 1.25/2 of us will return.

1. Appetizers: Calamari was different from what we expected to be : deep fried and crispy. This different is a good kind of different. The squid was not overcooked and had a very pleasant bbq texture to it. Not at all rubbery. Well executed.  The broken pork sausage was quite a good attempt in something different… but didn’t really blow our minds

2. Mains: The fish was really fresh. The texture of it was similar to salmon and cod fish mixed together (if that makes sense).  I really enjoyed it, although I must say it is not as ‘fatty’ in terms of ‘fish oiliness’ comparatively to salmon and cod, but the meat texture was firm and not overcooked.  Well executed.   The beef was quite well done as well, not over cooked and tough.

3. Sides:  I think the picture spoke for itself. It was quite good .

Been wanting to post about this place

Its one of those places where you read a lot of reviews about but just don’t know if it did live up to the reviews ..

Flan: berkshire pork, saute mushroom, egg, soubise sauce, cream, pommery mustard

Verdict: 2.5/4 of us will return.

1. Be prepared to queue quite a while if you don’t reserve beforehand!  – though i must say we managed to get our seats without reservation quite fast .. perhaps 1/2 hr wait? we met with the lunch crowd

2. I really liked the Flan , it was something different from the usual brunch affair. The pork was thoroughly braised and so soft that it just melts in your mouth. For mustard/dijon lovers like me, i couldn’t really taste the mustard, and the texture of the sauce tasted like there was mashed potatoes mixed in. Not that that was a bad thing altogether, but just quite a different taste : I was pleasantly surprised.

3. The hollandaise for the Eggs Benedict was not as sharp as I expected it to be,  and pretty minimal. The rest were pretty normal, though I must command their creativity in presenting Jam and Butter : They merged the two and what you got was a pink slab of butter -> sweet and salty at the same time! saves the hassle for lazy spreaders. 🙂

4. If you are a fan of toby estate’s coffee, you would enjoy the mocha and latte at this place. I must say the mocha is pretty decent

1. the crab cakes, we totally adore them! let me show you why and you will understand why we ordered seconds of this!!! where in the world in Singapore can you find real crabmeat fully stuffed crab cakes?  this is the holy grail of crab cakes! totally brought it up one notch

close up of crab cakes

close up of crab cakes

2. The crab was really well done – the herb and butter was not really a western style herb and butter .. in the sense it’s not like creamy until you feel sick of eating it .. its pretty light and well seasoned.

3. the combo bag was also really spicy ( If you eat laksa without adding the additional chilli, can’t finish a bowl of curry yong tau fu from food courts without adding more chilli, cannot finish a bowl of spicy ma la hotpot without the soup, then you would think the combo bag is spicy)  but really flavourful! the second favourite dish after the crab cakes and oysters

4. My prawn eaters mentioned  that the moonshine tiger prawns were also worth the bill and the next highlight because the prawns were very fresh, and the accompanying sauce ( 3 different types of chilli sauce with different spicy levels) was just awesome  ( better than the prawns in the combo bag)

5. this place is really interesting in terms of the dinning concept. let the pictures below explain why:

1. Brunch was quite good I would say.. would not say to die for totally but still decent we all reckon.
2. Coffee -> one of the determining factor for good brunches. This place boasts of using Toby estate coffee beans. Hmm .. Not that I am a total coffee connoisseur but I reckon if you do like your coffee to have a ‘mocha-ish’ taste you might like their coffee.
3. lemon tart was well balanced : not too sweet and not too sharp. Well-liked and approved by the sweet tooth around.
4. Do you know you could rent bicycles to cycle around the compound?

5. one good thing about hanging around hipsters area : sometimes if you are lucky, you get to see celebrities! we chanced upon :

Honestly the food was just mediocre. Coffee was average. But I guess for the price, its quite the bang for the buck. They do serve quite a bit of local fusion items as well…
We decided we would only come back if we want to chillax over a good book or just people watch/ relax and catch up .. but nope not for the food.

Apart from it being quite out of the way, the ambience here is pretty different from the usual Cafes. Located near a horse stable, you do get whiffs of horse poo, but other than that, it is very nice to chillax and catch up with friends. Very nice breeze (minus smell – depending where you sit also) at night 🙂
Dessert is really awesome, especially chocolate lovers who are looking for a greedy indulgence ( it is huge! just a heads up)
Mains were also good. We could not finish not because it sucked, but just slightly too much :p
would want to come back and try the brunch!!

Consistency is there .. Apart from the bad Ice mocha ( it was not thick? and tasted more like watery chocolate water) , the pancakes were just divine.
If you like your pancakes floury and thick, this would be the place to visit.
Loved the butter as well, very unique and ‘saltish sweet’  ..
Would come back for a sweet salty fix 🙂
